This scenario depicts Operation Long Reach, as American forces begin searching the Vietnamese countryside for elusive Viet Cong units. Rather than immediately engaging in large-scale battles, the opening stages of the operation focus on reconnaissance, movement and controlling the battlefield. This playthrough is recorded using Tabletop Simulator, allowing me to enjoy this excellent operational-level wargame in a digital format while preserving all of the mechanics of the original board game. In this episode 🎯 Operation Long Reach gets underway. 🎯 US forces use Airmobile units to engage the NVA regiments 🎯 Viet Cong patrols slow the American advance, increasing the cost of movement and making every decision more difficult. 🎯 The opening manoeuvres begin to shape the battle that follows. One of the mechanics I particularly enjoy in Vietnam 1965-1975 is the use of patrol counters. Although they don't represent major combat formations, they force commanders to treat the battlefield with caution. Every patrol encountered slows movement, disrupts plans and creates uncertainty, reflecting the constant challenge of operating in unfamiliar terrain against an elusive enemy. At the end of this episode I ask for your advice. The NVA Regiments need to withdraw, but where would you choose to retreat them? Would you preserve your forces for a later engagement, or position them to cause maximum disruption to the American advance? Let me know your thoughts in the comments.
