Gettysburg: The First Day | Revolution Games | Is This Any Better? | Blind Swords
After my recent video looking at The Three Days of Gettysburg Deluxe Edition, and particularly my struggles with the rules system, I received a great deal of feedback from viewers.
And I listened.
One suggestion came up repeatedly: if I want to play Gettysburg, perhaps I should take a serious look at the Blind Swords system from Revolution Games.
So that is exactly what I'm doing.
In this video I'm exploring Gettysburg: The First Day, part of Revolution Games' Blind Swords series, to see whether this system might be a better fit for me and potentially become my preferred way of gaming the American Civil War.
This isn't simply about asking which game has the easier rules. I'm interested in how the two approaches compare: how the games handle command and control, combat, movement, uncertainty and the general flow of an American Civil War battle.
Does Blind Swords give me the historical detail and decision-making I want without some of the difficulties I encountered with The Three Days of Gettysburg?
There are obviously significant differences between the two designs, and I'm not expecting one game simply to replicate the other with fewer rules. What I'm trying to discover is whether Gettysburg: The First Day provides the balance between historical flavour, complexity, playability and uncertainty that I'm looking for.
Most importantly, this video follows directly from the comments and suggestions on Why So Difficult? A number of you recommended Blind Swords, explained why you enjoy the system, and suggested that it might suit the way I like to play.
So this time I'm taking your advice and finding out for myself.
Could this be the system that finally tempts me to move away from the traditional GBACW approach?
And, ultimately...
Is this any better?
As always, I'd be very interested to hear from those of you who have experience with either — or both — systems. Which do you prefer, and why?
As always, thank you very much for watching. If you enjoyed the video, please consider liking, subscribing and joining me for the next one.

I use Cube4Me counter trays throughout most of my current wargaming videos and highly recommend them for organising counters.
