In this second part of Operation Long Reach, the American advance locates the elusive 33rd Independent Regiment, setting the stage for the first major clash of the scenario. Using their airmobile capability, the 1st Air Cavalry Division rapidly redeploys across the battlefield, exploiting its mobility to engage the enemy where least expected. What follows is a tense running battle through the Vietnamese countryside as both sides manoeuvre for the advantage. The engagement has a clear victor... but you'll have to watch to discover which side comes out on top. This episode also marks a change in presentation. Having started the series using Tabletop Simulator, I've now moved to the physical game with actual maps and counters. I hope this provides a more immersive experience and better reflects the feel of playing this excellent GMT Games title on the tabletop. One of the aspects I admire most about Vietnam 1965-1975 is how it captures the operational challenges of the conflict. Mobility, reconnaissance and timing are just as important as firepower, and the ability of the 1st Air Cavalry to rapidly shift forces around the battlefield creates opportunities that simply weren't available to conventional infantry formations. This episode concludes Turn 1 of the Silver Bayonet scenario, but the operation is far from over. The decisions made here will shape the remainder of the campaign as both commanders prepare for the battles still to come.
