The opening manoeuvres are over. Now the fighting begins. Welcome back to our opposed playthrough of Austerlitz 1805: Rising Eagles from Hexasim, part of the Eagles of France series. In Episode 1, I introduced the game, looked at some of the important rules and went through the victory conditions. In Episode 2, Mark joined me to take command of the Austrians, while I took command of Napoleon's French army, and the first moves of the battle began. Now, in Episode 3 – The First Assault, the Austrians make their intentions clear. Mark launches the first Austrian assault against Soult's forces, and the battle begins to move beyond manoeuvre and into direct confrontation. The plans made during those opening moves are now being tested as the two armies come into contact. For the French, the question is how Soult's troops will respond to the pressure. For the Austrians, this is the first opportunity to turn their movement into something more decisive. With an opposed game, neither of us knows exactly what the other is planning. Every commitment potentially reveals something, and every attack can create opportunities elsewhere on the battlefield. The first assault is underway...
