Strange Creatures is a trick-taking game with real deckbuilding mixed in — every card you play stays in your deck, and you spend coins to buy new “creature” cards straight into your hand, from designer Matthias Cramer and publisher AMIGO. Early on, a stamp for winning a trick is worth almost nothing, while losing a trick usually pays you coins — so for most of the game, you actively want to lose. It’s only in the final round, where a winning stamp is worth four times as much, that winning actually pays off. Why do you get stamps for any of this? Nobody knows — the theme is a pile of genuinely odd little creatures with no explanation for why collecting them earns you a stamp, and honestly, that’s part of the charm. Heads-up if you’re not comfortable with German: this year’s Essen release is German-only. AMIGO says on BoardGameGeek they’re talking to other publishers about an English edition, so this might be one to watch for rather than grab this year.
