Watch “Sid Meier's Civilization | Board Game Review,” a board game review for Sid Meier's Civilization: The Board Game from Whose Turn? on BoardGameVideo.
Description provided by Whose Turn? on YouTube:
Hello everyone, Whose Turn gaming here and today we're reviewing the board game Sid Meier's Civilization.
Now this game is very similar to the video games that share the same name, albeit not as in depth for obvious reasons. This is also an older version of the game, as I believe there are a few iterations of the game out there. That being said, let's get right into it.
First and foremost, this game is long! It takes about 15 to 20 minutes to setup, but plays anywhere from 2-5 hours depending on experience and the number of players. This is big negative about the game as most people cannot sink 5 hours into playing one board game.
The other bad part of the game is that the military and culture victories are almost impossible. You have to be trying for them right out of the gate, and they do NOT stack with the other ones. This means if you want military, you have to build it fast, early, and plan it out for that. Culture is the same, but I've never seen a full culture victory for this game. It's just too time consuming compared to economy and technology, so it's often ignored. Unsure if the expansions fix this, but worth mentioning.
Otherwise, this game is phenomenal. The game itself is beautiful, and the map is modular. You randomize the tiles, and flip them up based on how they are explored. You can get stuck without the right tech, as you need a certain one to cross rivers, but otherwise the tech tree is completely on how you want to play.
When you get coins, you boost your tech, so you can do both at once and that really helps with getting production as well. The combat, while being a little bit of a flaw, does take strategy into effect and while you need to get lucky, you can also outsmart your opponent with how you lay down.
How production works mirrors the video game, and you can build building to affect how you play overall.
This game is a solid game, and while it does have it's flaws, it's one of my personal favorites. I do have a bit of nostalgia goggles for this one as it was one of my first "real" board games to have ever played, but I love it nonetheless.
Thank you all for watching, and let us know in the comments below if you enjoy it or would rather play something else.
