Hello everyone! In this video we share our thoughts on the classic King of Tokyo.
In King of Tokyo, you play the role of one of six monsters, and must be.....the King of Tokyo. You can do this either by getting to 20 points first, or by being the last monster standing. Simple as that!
Each player takes turns rolling dice, and either keeping what is rolled, or re-rolling to get something different. They are a D6 dice, but only have the numbers 1, 2, and 3. The other 3 sides, are for energy(lightning bolt), Punch(claw), and Heal(heart). Players can keep any dice, or reroll them up to 3 times total. They must then keep whatever is thrown on the third throw.
The strategy comes from actually going into, or staying, in Tokyo. You can heal outside of the city, but once inside, all damage you take is there. Everyone outside of Tokyo hits you, but you hit everyone. So it's very much a push your luck kind of game.
What adds to the luck element is the cards. You can acquire energy and thus purchase cards to enhance your gameplay. Cards either provide a passive bonus for you, such as doing extra damage or healing when doing damage, to giving you health or points outright. There are even some that give you an extra life!
So knowing when to throw punches, when to bow out of Tokyo, or when to gain a life is all part of the game. While we enjoy it as it's a fun game, it's not something we try to play often as we are fond of the more strategic games and would rather play them. That being said, it's a game that should be in every collection as it's still fun, to just take it out, pretend to be Godzilla, and punch your friends.
