Watch “Massive Darkness 2 Angels – Michael & Uriel Airbrush Painting Tutorial with Lotus Thalia,” a board game video on BoardGameVideo.
Description provided by Lotus Thalia on YouTube:
In this miniature painting video, I paint Archangels Michael and Uriel from the Massive Darkness 2 board game, using two completely different color palettes and painting approaches.
Michael receives a bright, celestial palette built around layered white wings, pale fabric, warm metallic armor, and subtle shimmer effects. Uriel moves into a much more dramatic atmosphere with fiery red, orange, and yellow airbrush gradients, bright fluorescent highlights, red clothing, and polished silver armor.
For Michael, I begin building the enormous wings with Ivory and White through the airbrush. Instead of covering the feathers with one flat white color, I use several thin passes and preserve subtle differences between the raised areas and recesses. At 01:22, I introduce Sand with the airbrush to warm the transitions and give the feathers more depth.
The shield is painted with Chainmetal and finished with Silver around the edges. I use Pale Flesh for Michael’s skin, Greedy Gold for the decorative elements, Bronze for the armor, Old Wood for the sandal details, and Blood Angels Red for the helmet plume.
Fairy Dust adds a subtle shimmer to the skirt and wings. I first apply it selectively, then later use it with a controlled dry-brush technique to catch the raised textures. Because I do not want Michael’s white fabric to look completely flat, I apply a grey shade across the skirt to define the folds. A yellow wash is also used on the wings to increase the separation between the feathers and add warmth to the pale color palette.
The base is finished with Dark Earth diorama texture and small stones. Agrax Earthshade is applied to the armor to strengthen the recesses and give the bronze and gold areas more depth.
At 15:23, I begin painting Uriel. His entire color atmosphere is created with layered Orange, Fairy Red, and Yellow through the airbrush. I keep the layers thin so the earlier colors remain visible and form smooth transitions.
Fluorescent Yellow and Moon Yellow are airbrushed onto the outer tips and brightest areas. Blood Angels Red is used for the clothing, while Polished Silver defines the upper armor and sword details.
A mixture of White and Yellow is then dry-brushed across the raised fiery textures. The weapons receive a Silver dry-brush highlight, followed by a yellow wash to connect the brightest areas. I keep Uriel’s base completely black so the fiery colors and metallic silhouette remain the main focus.
These are the actual colors and techniques I used while painting my own Massive Darkness 2 miniatures. Both models come from the same board game, but their different palettes give them completely different personalities.
Every part of the painting, filming, narration, editing, and final presentation was created by me.
Which palette do you prefer: Michael’s bright wings and warm metallic armor, or Uriel’s fiery airbrush gradients and dark silhouette?
