*3 RULES CLARIFICATIONS:*
1) When you end your boat on an empty harbor, the rulebook says you must deactivate your current harbor tile. This is buried in a long paragraph of text and is _very_ easy to miss (so much so we have been playing this wrong for years, until a kind user pointed that out in the comments). This changes your strategy of moving. In the video, I said you sometimes want to land your boat on an empty harbor space if you like your current bonus tile. Well, that is no longer true with this rule clarification. Now, if you end on an empty harbor, you no longer get to keep your bonus tile active. I can't imagine it would change the outcome of the game drastically, so I am going to continue to play the way I have been playing because I've always enjoyed the decision of whether to end on an empty space or not. But I would recommend you try it both ways and see which way you prefer.
2) Regarding the start player token (5:27), you never pass the token. Turns pass clockwise, but the start player _token_ remains with the original start player as a reminder to ensure each player takes the same number of turns. Along those same lines, I slightly misspoke at the end game trigger (25:30). I say "each other player" gets one more turn. I should've said "each other player left in the round ." I went on to say everyone has the same number of turns, which is the proper way to play. Basically once the cards are gone, you continue taking turns until the player to the right of the original start player takes their turn. Thanks to the kind users who pointed this out in the comments on YT and BGG. Thank you!
3) Regarding bartering/trading (11:00), the rules seem to indicate that you can not simply gift a free ducat to get a prestige tile. Instead, the rules suggest the active player must include a card in all trades (although it does not explicitly say it that way... it's more implied). Let's just say it could have been worded much clearer, and thanks to the kind user who pointed this out as well. After re-reading the sentence about 5 times, I am fairly confident the active player must include a card in all trades. So to clarify, the active player may gift a card with nothing in return, but may not gift a ducat simply to get a prestige tile. Thank you to the BGG user who reached out!
*EPISODE 22* features a tutorial & review of OLTRE MARE (2004) designed by Emanuele Ornella. This hidden gem trading/bartering game reminds me of Bohnanza, but it's a bit more complex and much more of a euro game. I am not always in the mood for negotiation games, but Oltre Mare is a go-to game for us in that genre because of its pleasant & smooth gameplay, simple but tough decisions, and low rules overhead. For a game that's nearly 20 years old, this one still holds up in my opinion; it actually feels quite fresh with its own unique identity. I haven't played too many games that feel similar to Oltre Mare.
