*RULES CLARIFICATIONS:*
- The Lancaster and York players are determined randomly during setup by shuffling the tiles and dealing them out. 2 players will be Lancaster, and 2 players will be York. Your "teammate" does not change for the entire game. You are never allowed to talk across the table and discuss your moves. The Lancaster/York teams are only used in a 4p game (which is the only way you should play this game, in my opinion).
*ABOUT UNDISCOVERED GAMES*
Welcome to my YouTube channel dedicated to lesser-known & forgotten board games. My mission is to archive old and forgotten board games by making video content so these games don't get buried and lost in the past. I love to share my favorite discoveries with the world and make it easier for other people to research unknown board games. This is still a relatively small channel trying to build an audience who appreciates these hidden gems and older games. If you want to go on this journey to discover the undiscovered, please subscribe to the channel, share our content, and consider becoming a member or giving a small donation to help us grow.
*EPISODE 98: Secret Schemes and Sovereign Struggles* features a stunningly beautiful game from 2010 called Wars of the Roses: Lancaster vs. York. Several channel members requested a video for this game, so thanks to my game group, I was able to make it happen. I actually played this game once about 10 years ago, but I forgot most of it and had to relearn it for the video. We logged 7 plays leading up to this video, and I am ready to take a little break from this one, honestly. The game is very slow-moving and procedural (which is its biggest flaw, in my opinion), but when the exciting moments do happen, they make up for the fiddly upkeep. Players simultaneously program their entire turn, which can feel like a sandbox game because of all the choices available. This endless array of possible attacks and defenses can cause analysis paralysis, but if you can play this game casually, the action programming is quite enjoyable. I believe this game should only be played at 4 players because you have a temporary teammate. Your "teammate" is still your opponent, but there are times where it makes sense to work together. Still, at some point, you should abandon your teammate (and your teammate will abandon you) and try to win the game. This creates a fun tension throughout: When is my ally going to betray me?
