Minikin City — trick-taking, tableau-building, and ridiculously cute (SPIEL Essen 2026)

Description provided by Luzapalooza on YouTube:

Minikin City is a trick-taking game that refuses to play like one: usually if you're not winning the trick, it doesn't matter — here, first, second, and even third place all score. Pile on a tableau you build card by card and an entire city of ridiculously cute minikin figurines you collect along the way, and you get trick-taking, tableau-building, and set collection all rolled into one. This video is part of our Essen Countdown on Luzapalooza: every day until SPIEL Essen 2026, we spotlight one game worth putting on your radar — from the big anticipated releases to the tiny games you could easily miss in the crowd. Minikin City on BGG: https://boardgamegeek.com/boardgame/458770/minikin-city Every card you play goes straight into your own tableau, so you're never just asking "do I win this trick" — you're also asking "is this card actually useful for my city." Rack up enough purple prize tokens and the scoring curve gets brutal: one token is worth one point, but six of them are worth twenty-one. The German edition is from Pegasus Spiele, the English edition from Cranio Creations — and either way, those little minikin figures you place on your cards are the best part of the whole game. The Meet & Play will take place at Saal Essen on Saturday, October 24th. We'll be there starting at 3 PM — here's a link to the event with a photo showing exactly where to find the room: https://meet-and-play.de/en/about/ If this is your third video on the channel, maybe it's time to subscribe. :-) Luzapalooza on Twitch: https://www.twitch.tv/Luzapalooza This Game Is Broken — the board game comedy podcast: https://open.spotify.com/show/1GXyynkXltlLY3hGNoYtnB Thanks for watching, and check out the rest of our Essen Countdown for more games!
