Darrell shook the snow off his overcoat and stepped into the old house. Earlier a surprised Lapham Peabody had greeted Darrell with delight.
'Back so soon?' the old man had beamed. A few pleasantries exchanged, a pot of coffee placed on the curator's stove, Darrell had explained his visit to the Unvisited Isle pretending to be researching a story on Prescott Puttnam Jr based on the tale Lapham had recounted to him earlier. It had given Darrell an idea of a small piece about Arkham's more historically 'colourful' citizens he said. Lapham had been full of local information and in a long outpouring of that knowledge he had mentioned a Kezia Mason who had lived in an old house in French Hill.
'A witch they say!' exclaimed the old man with a mischievous twinkle in his eye - Darrell had over the course of the hours conversation come to understand that salacious historical gossip was a favourite pastime of E. Lapham Peabody. The really interesting thing however was the information that the Historical Society had on this 'witch'. Kezia Mason was also rumoured to be a blood descendant of the original Misqat tribe... Darrell made a note of the address and politely gave his excuses, thanking Lapham for the cup of coffee that he had generously made him.
Now scant minutes later Darrell was crossing the threshold of the house. Outside it was surrounded by the close packed tenements of old French Hill, many of which were in an abandoned and ruinous condition in this area. The closely knit whole stayed stubbornly upright in a haphazard fashion glued together by a combination of time and piecemeal repairs over long years. Little did Darrell realise that this whole block was being held together by the sleeping beast that lay sprawled within its very foundations. But Darrell had been both careful and quiet and so he was able to climb the rotting steps blissfully unaware of that which lay in a fitful dormancy a few feet below. It wasn't till he reached the attic bedrooms that Darrell became truly alarmed - alarmed over and above the decaying fabric of the building itself. A ghostly figure in the northern box room had risen through the floor, wisps of tattered and frayed clothing floating in an otherworldly breeze that Darrell couldn't feel but for his hairs that danced and bristled on the nape of his neck. The figure turned; it's face a screaming visage of twisted teeth and bulging eyes. Darrell thrust a hand into his pocket and grasped the vial there. If not for the horrors of the past few days he doubted that he could have acted in any other fashion than running down the dilapidated stairwell, but he now discovered a new-found resolve gripped him and he threw the vial of holy water at the oncoming shade...

About Arkham Horror, from BoardGameGeek:
The year is 1926, and it is the height of the Roaring Twenties. Flappers dance till dawn in smoke-filled speakeasies drinking alcohol supplied by rum runners and the mob. It's a celebration to end all celebrations in the aftermath of the war to end all wars.
Yet a dark shadow grows in the city of Arkham. Alien entities known as Ancient Ones lurk in the emptiness beyond space and time, writhing at the gates between worlds. These gates have begun to open and must be closed before the Ancient Ones make our world their ruined domination.
Only a handful of investigators stand against the Arkham Horror. Will they Prevail?
Arkham Horror is a cooperative adventure game themed around H.P Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Players choose from 16 Investigators and take to the streets of Arkham. Before the game, one of the eight Ancient Ones is chosen and it's up to the Investigators to prevent it from breaking into our world. During the course of the game, players will upgrade their characters by acquiring skills, allies, items, weapons, and spells. It's up to the players to clean out the streets of Arkham by fighting many different types of monsters, but their main goal is to close gates to other dimensions that are opening up around town. With too many gates open the Ancient One awakens and the players only have one last chance to save the world - defeat the Ancient One in combat!
