Darrell rushed into the Arkham Historical society brushing off the snow from his overcoat. After realising there were no cabs on the frozen streets he had decided to walk all the way from Easttown. It was a decision he regretted after three blocks but he had ploughed onward. Fortunately, the biting northerly was at his back all the way pushing him along. As he thumped his hat showering the carpet with icy crystals Mr E. Lapham Peabody the curator, regarded him from behind a small table upon which was a small plaque offering up this very information.
“Can I help you… now wait a minute. Aren’t you the photographer from the Advertiser? Darren Simmons, isn’t it?”
“Darrell, Mr Peabody.”
“Of course! Darrell! And you one of our native sons! Do forgive me, my boy. Call me Lapham. I must say that you took some lovely photographs of our centenary three years ago. There near the door where you came in is the one you took of us all outside with the mayor and Representative Bates there. Heard he is the mayor of Salem now…” Peabody was gesturing at a gilt framed photograph prominently displayed by the entrance.
Darrell listened as the old man chatted away. The weather had meant there had been next to no members or visitors for three days. After discussing the news - and the weather – Darrell asked if Peabody could direct him to any archives relating to Misqat legends? Were there any? Peabody had tapped his temple in thought. ”Well, there are some interesting pieces on the first floor but that is restricted. Members only I’m afraid Darrell. If it were up to me…” the old man sighed and spread his hands in condolence.
“Perhaps I could join… Lapham?” Darrell tried to match the old fellow’s familiarity.
“Goodness yes! I should have thought of that! It’ll be $3 – it should be $5 but if you’re introduced by another member its $3. And I’m introducing you, aren’t I?” he beamed, his eyes twinkling behind his horn-rimmed spectacles. He grabbed a fountain pen and a card.
Peabody insisted on showing him upstairs. “It’s a bit of a warren for newcomers!” He led the photographer into a large library and exhibition space. Several dark oakwood doors led off into smaller studies and reading rooms. At one end was the Native American section. “All this was kind of donated by Prescott Puttnam Jr. I say kind of because... well he was a strange man. Inherited a fortune from shipping and spent it all on amassing a huge archaeological and anthropological collection. Perfectly normal then he went to Egypt at the turn of the century. Came back a different fellow altogether. In a decade he was penniless and raving. Ended up living in a shack on that little unvisited island in the middle of the Miskatonic till he died a few years later… Yes that’s the one. Across from the River Docks. We bought all this from him piecemeal as his fortune disappeared. Bit of a mish-mash. Misqat, Egyptian, Greek and even Nepalese! That’s in the Himalayas you know. The university has most of his collection of course. They had deeper pockets, ha, ha. Now look at this: The Sigil of Hermes Trismegistus. The god Thoth, you know. Ancient Egypt. We bagged that right from under the noses of those university jackals!” Peabody wittered on but Darrell was staring at the papyrus. There was a glyph that, although highly stylised, looked like the creature he had seen in the woods…
