Carolyn crept behind the bandstand. With the appallingly bitter weather Independence Square was thankfully deserted. Off to Carolyn’s left was the Founders Rock which from this vantage point appeared to crouch beneath the frame of McIntyre Arch. Through the arch Carolyn could see the deserted, frozen edifice of City Hall. The rock had seemed to glimmer strangely in the low light. How many times had she seen it? Three? Four? Carolyn hadn’t lived in Arkham long. 18 months. She knew the stone was ancient, but Mandy had offered up more information at the meeting they had taken with Simmons. Co-opted as a symbol of Independence because it had been used as a rallying point against the British, it was now thought to have pre-dated European settlement by thousands of years. A dark, possibly meteoric rock shot through with bands of crimson coloured quartz it was covered in queer markings that had been graven into its surface. Most were worn down to nothingness but in several places sheltered from the elements, remnants remained visible. According to Mandy’s research the markings were thought to have been the work of a shunned element of the Misqat tribe – themselves an offshoot of the Wampanoag peoples of eastern Massachusetts. Native American lore attributed the rock to the Great Sky Peoples and the Misqat were said to worship it. What had been interesting was the belief these rituals were enacted to placate an ice demon so that its freezing talons might release Spring from its glacial grip. These forbidden rituals were said to involve eating the flesh of their fellow men…
When Carolyn arrived, she had sensed something was very wrong. Now she was sure of it. The rock seemed to intensify its eldritch glow and next to its surface the frigid air almost seemed to boil as if this cosmic wanderer of the outer dark had plunged into the earth but moments before. In the roiling haze Carolyn caught glimpses of somewhere else, somewhere dark and gloom filled under a blood red sky. But much, much worse was the entity that flickered in and out of view. Had it crawled forth from this dismal otherworldly plane? A vast reptilian monstrosity that, as it phased in and out of view, seemed almost like a projection of old and decaying film stock onto the white frozen backdrop of Arkham itself. It recalled both crocodilian and lizard-like features yet seemed to be able to rise easily upon its rear legs and vast tail. It was the size of a house! And most terrifying of all it had her trapped here cowering behind the old bandstand. Carolyn swallowed hard and tensed for action. As the beast once again seemed to phase out of view she stumbled and ran towards the rock and plunged through the shimmering portal…

About Arkham Horror, from BoardGameGeek:
The year is 1926, and it is the height of the Roaring Twenties. Flappers dance till dawn in smoke-filled speakeasies drinking alcohol supplied by rum runners and the mob. It's a celebration to end all celebrations in the aftermath of the war to end all wars.
Yet a dark shadow grows in the city of Arkham. Alien entities known as Ancient Ones lurk in the emptiness beyond space and time, writhing at the gates between worlds. These gates have begun to open and must be closed before the Ancient Ones make our world their ruined domination.
Only a handful of investigators stand against the Arkham Horror. Will they Prevail?
Arkham Horror is a cooperative adventure game themed around H.P Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Players choose from 16 Investigators and take to the streets of Arkham. Before the game, one of the eight Ancient Ones is chosen and it's up to the Investigators to prevent it from breaking into our world. During the course of the game, players will upgrade their characters by acquiring skills, allies, items, weapons, and spells. It's up to the players to clean out the streets of Arkham by fighting many different types of monsters, but their main goal is to close gates to other dimensions that are opening up around town. With too many gates open the Ancient One awakens and the players only have one last chance to save the world - defeat the Ancient One in combat!
