Mandy shuddered. What an awful, horrible old house. She checked her notes. This was the place where Carolyn said her murdered patient had lived rough until the cops had picked him up, raving and gibbering, early last year. Tucked away behind some stunted trees in the once thriving Merchant District it had possibly been an overseer's or manager's home. It was larger and lay a little further up a low hill than the ruined lines of huddled, decrepit cottages that might have served as homes for the labourers. Decades of coal smoke had coated everything from crooked slates, crumbling bricks and broken windows in a thick dark grime. There were some tyre marks in the frozen mud of the driveway but no car. Mandy stood a long time in the driveway building up her courage to go up to the front door, which was slightly ajar. Steeling herself Mandy finally mounted the creaking porch and pushed open the door.
The place stank of rot and mildew. Wainscotting and plaster sagged and much of it had fallen away laying strewn about the floors. There were footprints in the dust and trash had been moved aside in places as if to make a walkway. These marks certainly looked recent. Standing in the old parlour Mandy could see into a fetid drawing room and noted signs of a recent occupation. There were two bedrolls on the musty carpet, a primus stove and some stacked cans of food on an old table as well as several empty beer bottles standing in a wooden crate. She listened. The whole fabric of the building creaked from the bitterly cold wind outside. Entering the living space slowly and carefully she saw a cord of cut wood and old newspaper by the old fireplace showing that it too had been recently lit. On the table and the mantlepiece were several black candles affixed by their own greasy wax to the surfaces. Strange as there was also a kerosene lamp on a small desk near an empty bookcase. Stirring the ashes with the piece of firewood Mandy guessed it hadn't been lit for at least a couple of days, maybe more. Hoboes? Carolyn's old patient? Mandy didn't think so. The primus and the bedrolls were new. The beer bottles, camping cutlery and plates were too. Approaching the desk she saw a sheaf of papers. She shook the lamp and was pleased to find it still contained a little fuel. She pumped then lit it and turned her attention to the papers. Her eyes soon widened. Amongst leaflets for Providence museum there was a business card. 'DIAMOND INVESTIGATIONS, Discretion guaranteed. 20 years experience. Missing Persons and Objects a speciality. Reasonable Rates' She pulled out her purse and looked inside, Sure enough a twin was in there given to her by the man himself with the business address and phone number on its reverse. More disturbing however was what the card was stapled to. Three pictures of Joe himself. All clandestinely taken Mandy was sure. One showed the investigator leaving his office, another was of him hailing a cab and a third was him stamping on a cigarette outside the Silver Twilight Lodge. Joe had brought her a document last week for her to take a look at. He'd said it was from the Lodge. Full of arcane symbols with a kind of ritual in bastardised Latin... Diamond! Mandy mentally kicked herself. Why hadn't she thought of him during her meeting this morning with Carolyn and Simmons? A professional investigator! Just then there was a tremendous groan of creaking wood. Mandy looked up in panic. The ceiling between the parlour and drawing room was sagging alarmingly. Mandy grabbed the papers and ran for the door...
