Simmons drained his coffee and stumbled outside. The air was frigid, wind whipping up the loose snow on the sidewalk and turning it into roiling, stinging clouds of icy crystals. Pulling up the collar of his overcoat he made his way to the public call booth. He could have used the phone in Velma’s but there were too many people – too many ears to overhear what he would say. Too many ears that might hear him babbling that he thought he was going insane. That he had seen a man last night in Arkham Woods… at least… a thing made of branches and twigs that walked like a man. A thing holding the remains of a dead dog in its wooden, claw-like talons. He closed his eyes and shook his head. Just a simple job. A few missing pets. Frantic dog walkers calling in complaining about useless cops. “It might be a wolf! Come down from the mountains for food or somethin’? Try and get a picture of it or its tracks! That’s a front-page scoop right there!” That had been Jeffries his editor. Simmons shivered and not only from the cold as he dug frantically in his pocket. Eventually he pulled out Dr Fern’s card. Thank God he’d covered the gala at City Hall the previous weekend. She had been real nice. New in from Providence and on her own - an outsider at the party just like him. A photographer is never part of the gathering that he is covering. He stands outside of it. To everyone there he is just... an observer. They had chatted for a good while. Heaven knows why he’d told her he had been in the war? Why he'd mentioned the dreadful things he had seen that he hadn’t told nobody? Ever. She had been just so easy to talk to. Made you feel real relaxed. It was probably why she was in the racket she was in, right? He took a deep breath of cool air and dialled the number.
“Arkham Psychiatric Hospital. How can I help you?”
“I’d like to speak to Dr Carolyn Fern please. As a matter of urgency. My name is Darrell Simmons… She might remember me from City Hall?” he added quickly – a slight misdirection but if 'City Hall' got him past the front desk then all well and good.
“I’m afraid Dr Fern…” Simmons' heart sank but then the voice on the phone suddenly brightened. “Oh you’re in luck Mr Simmons. Dr Fern has just arrived in the building. I’ll pass you across…” Over the connection Simmons heard the receptionist give Dr Fern his name. Simmons hoped to hell that she would agree to see him…

About Arkham Horror, from BoardGameGeek:
The year is 1926, and it is the height of the Roaring Twenties. Flappers dance till dawn in smoke-filled speakeasies drinking alcohol supplied by rum runners and the mob. It's a celebration to end all celebrations in the aftermath of the war to end all wars.
Yet a dark shadow grows in the city of Arkham. Alien entities known as Ancient Ones lurk in the emptiness beyond space and time, writhing at the gates between worlds. These gates have begun to open and must be closed before the Ancient Ones make our world their ruined domination.
Only a handful of investigators stand against the Arkham Horror. Will they Prevail?
Arkham Horror is a cooperative adventure game themed around H.P Lovecraft's Cthulhu Mythos. Players choose from 16 Investigators and take to the streets of Arkham. Before the game, one of the eight Ancient Ones is chosen and it's up to the Investigators to prevent it from breaking into our world. During the course of the game, players will upgrade their characters by acquiring skills, allies, items, weapons, and spells. It's up to the players to clean out the streets of Arkham by fighting many different types of monsters, but their main goal is to close gates to other dimensions that are opening up around town. With too many gates open the Ancient One awakens and the players only have one last chance to save the world - defeat the Ancient One in combat!
