The object in each duel is to win by either: reducing your opponent’s life points to zero, having a card’s text say you win, or if your opponent is unable to draw a card. If there is a discrepancy between these rules and a card’s text, the card’s text takes priority. To understand how to read card text, check out this video. To begin play, each player starts the duel with 8,000 life points which is recorded so it is always visible by both players. The term “Life points” may be abbreviated on cards as “LP”. Players shuffle their own decks, then shuffle and cut their opponent’s deck, then the decks are placed face-down in their correct zone. If using extra decks, place them face-down in their spot without shuffling them. Each player shows their opponent their face-down side deck, without revealing it, so its quantity can be counted and verified. After each duel, if you swap cards, you must repeat this process to ensure the card count remains the same. For the first duel in a match, or if the previous duel ended in a tie, flip a coin or play rock paper scissors. The winner decides who goes first. After that, the loser of the previous duel decides. Once decided, both played then draw 5 cards from the top of their deck. This is your starting hand. The number of cards in player’s hands is public knowledge at all times. A Duel progresses in a series of turns which are divided into phases. The order of the phases are: Draw phase, standby phase, Main phase 1, battle phase, main phase 2, end phase. Some cards, like Traps or Quick-Play Spells, can be activated in any phase. Draw phase: Except for the very first turn of the duel, each turn begins with drawing 1 card from the top of your deck. If you have no cards left when you need to draw, you lose the duel. Standby phase: Some cards have effects that activate or a cost you must pay in this phase. Main phase 1: This is when you can play monsters, change monster battle positions, activate a card’s effect, and play or activate Spell and Trap Cards. These actions can be done in any order you want, but some of them have restrictions. There are several ways to play normal and effect monsters onto the field. Take note that some effect monsters may have restrictions. To Normal Summon a monster, play a Monster Card from your hand that is level 4 or lower onto a vacant spot in the main monster zone in face-up Attack Position. To “Normal Set”, also called “set”, play a Monster Card from your hand that is level 4 or lower in face-down. Defense Position. A monster Set on the field is NOT considered Summoned. It has been Set and can be Summoned with a Flip Summon or flipped face-up by an attack or card effect. All Normal Monsters and most Effect Monsters can be normal Summoned or Set. You cannot Normal Summon a monster to the field in face-up Defense Position or set a monster to face down attack position. To summon a monster of level 5 or higher, you must “Tribute Summon” them to faceup attack position or “Tribute set” them to facedown defense position by tributing monsters you control by sending the required number of tribute monsters to the graveyard. Monsters that are Level 5 or 6 require 1 tribute, while Level 7 or higher requires 2 tributes. If you tribute an opponent’s monster under your control, that card is sent to its owner’s graveyard instead of yours. A monster Tribute Set on the field is NOT considered Summoned...
