The biggest and most important battle fought during this war was the battle of Điện Biên Phủ, which took place from March to May 1954. It is there, in a valley distant 295 kilometres from Hanoi, that the French implanted a military base, that was supposed to lure the Việt Minh forces to attack. And they did attack.
