Wolę o tym nie mówić ("I'd rather not talk about it") is a historical board game for 3–5 players, based on the exhibition of the same name. The game is a joint project by two institutions: the Museum of the Second World War in Gdańsk and the Gdańsk Museum, depicting the fate of the city's inhabitants during the difficult and turbulent period from 1920 to 1947, when Gdańsk changed its allegiance, political system and administration several times.
Following Germany's defeat in the First World War, the Free City of Gdańsk was established; after 1939, it was incorporated into the Third Reich, only to find itself within Poland's borders in 1945.
As a result of political and social events, the rise of nationalism and international tensions, the people of Gdańsk – Poles, Germans, Jews and Kashubians – were increasingly confronted with questions about their identity and political views. Although they did not yet realise it, there was usually no single ‘right' answer to these questions that would ensure the safety of their loved ones. Hard times and tragic events were ultimately to affect all the inhabitants of Gdańsk without exception: first the Poles, and later the Germans as well.
The first part of the game covers the period 1920–1939, that is, from the formal establishment of the Free City of Gdańsk to the outbreak of the Second World War. The second part covers the years 1939–1947, that is, the period of the Second World War, the capture of Gdańsk by the Red Army, and the time when the structures of the emerging post-war Polish state took power. Each part has different rules, designed to reflect the drastic nature of the change that occurred following the German invasion, which began on 1 September 1939. Players will make decisions and participate in historical events from the perspective of a family, striving to protect its members during this turbulent period.
