Quill Seeker

From BoardGameGeek

Quill Seeker is one of the 8 games in Dr. Finn's Book of Two-Player Strategy and Word Games. The game consists of one game sheet and requires no other components -- just a pencil for each player. Quill Seeker is a five-round competitive word game in which players capture letters from a shared grid to build high-scoring words. At the start of the game, a randomly determined “starting letter” anchors the first move. On each turn, a player selects one of their available capture options and draws a rectangle around 4 to 8 adjacent letters in a single row or column. After the first turn, every capture must cross a previously captured set, creating an evolving web of intersecting letter paths across the board. From the letters they capture, players spell a word using all but one of those letters, rearranging them as needed. Letter values determine the score for that round, and any star symbols may act as wild letters worth zero points. If a captured letter includes a paired object, the player marks that object toward end-game bonuses. The one unused letter from each turn is added to the player's personal bonus word area, slowly building toward a potential five-letter word. After five rounds, players total three sources of points: the five words they spelled during the game, their completed bonus word, and the number of different objects they collected. If the bonus letters form a five-letter word in the exact order written, the word's value is doubled; otherwise, the letters may be rearranged for standard scoring. With spatial capture rules, limited options, and layered scoring decisions, Quill Seeker combines grid strategy and vocabulary skill in a focused, head-to-head contest. -description from designer
