Watch “Unofficial Solo Mode,” a how-to-play guide for Trails from Merlin's Manor on BoardGameVideo.
Description provided by Merlin's Manor on YouTube:
This game plays 2-4 players and thus did not come with a solo mode. Someone asked about a solo mode on Parks Facebook group, so I thought I'd try to make a solo mode. This has only been play-tested 3 times, so far and so it may need some tweaks to better balance the game. Try it out, and if you have any ideas for improvements, let me know in the comments.
Set-up: same as a two player game, except Automa will start at the trail end (keeps game from advancing too quickly as well as delays Automa grabbing cards before you get to the trail end/ head). Automa gets the same starting resources as human players and starts with a face-up badge card.
Automa movement: Roll a D-6. ODD = move 1; even = move 2. If Automa is in the space adjacent to the trail head at the start of its turn, there is no need to roll as the Automa will go straight to the trail end/head (just like human players cannot skip the space).
Automa ignores the resource limit (this facilitates gameplay without decisions needing to be made as well as adds balance due to Automa not planning in resource gathering and skipping over resources more often).
When visiting the Trade space, Automa gets 1 of each resource instead of trading (eliminates choice and possibly adds to balance).
When visiting the camera space, Automa pays the resource it has the MOST of. In the case of a tie, shake 1 of each tied resource cube in hands and draw one at random.
When reaching the trail head/ end, Automa buys all the cards it can afford, starting with highest VP card it can afford. If there is a tie, prioritize tied card that gives most resources. If still tied, prioritize tied card with most birds. If still tied, prioritize card in hand. If there is still a tie between the communal cards, then select at random. (Harder variant: Prioritize card purchasing by what will yield the most VP overall... Getting cards that grant resources first if the resources will allow Automa to buy more cards than the top down method).
Automa resolves sun bonuses and wildlife the same as a human player, with the exception of rolling the bear symbol. If the bear symbol is rolled, then Automa gains the benefit from the bear's current location and the bear remains on that space.
If you trigger the end game, then Automa advances on its final turn to the trail head/ end (direction it is facing) and buys any badges it can buy. If Automa triggers the end game, you take your final turn as normal.
