Originally called the Checkered Game of Life, it was created by Milton Bradley in 1860. The concept of the game was to encourage players to live virtuous lives by presenting players with various moral choices that could lead them to victory or loss respectively. Morality was such a central theme to the game, that Milton Bradley chose to provide players with a numbered top called a teetotum instead of dice due to the sinful reputation that dice carried with them.

On the 100th anniversary of the brand, Milton Bradley released The Game of Life, a modern reimagining of the original classic. Though The Game of Life featured many design cues that harken back to its origins, the central theme of the game had shifted to reflect the modern sensibilities of the mid-twentieth century. No longer concerned with morality and virtue, The Game of Life now centers around the accrual of wealth in preparation for retirement while weathering the random events of life.
Today, I have a copy of the original 1960 edition of The Game of Life, as heartily endorsed by Art Linkletter, and a modern copy of the game of life from 2021. Let’s take a look at both of them and see what has changed and what stayed the same over the course of sixty years!
