Dungeon Petz is a worker placement/blind bidding/puzzle style game that has players running a pet shop selling baby monsters. Theme is at the forefront of this highly enjoyable gem. Don't miss out. Easily my favorite game of 2011.
Video/Rules Notes:
One oversight that I had when I set up the board is that each player gets a starting amount of 2 gold and then they get the turn's income of 1 or 2 gold.
Also, when describing each of the needs for the petz I left out the Sickness need and the Potion need. I recorded these but due to retakes and other nonsense I didn't notice that this footage was missing until I was finished uploading the video. I'll explain each briefly here:
Sickness: Each sickness need adds a sickness value to the pet in question. Once triggered, you add the total amount of sickness cards to the amount of poo in the cage in question. If the total equals two or less then everything is okay. If the total is three or more then your pet gets sick and receives suffering tokens. They receive one suffering token for going over two points and an additional token for each point over two that they got. Thus, if you have 3 sickness points they receive two suffering. If you have 5 sickness points then you get 4 suffering.
Potion: If you hold a potion card you can substitute the potion card for any need of your pet. When resolving the potion card nothing needs to be done...your pet is simply sleeping for this need. Discard a card of the colour that you replaced.
