Watch “Last Frontier: The Vesuvius Incident Play 1 Part 2,” a gameplay video for Last Frontier: The Vesuvius Incident from Ryanmobile on BoardGameVideo.
Description provided by Ryanmobile on YouTube:
Part 1: Exploration Turns 15-13.
I play through Exploration turns 15-13 in this video as well as two combat turns. The Marines have their first encounter with the aliens and with a live crew member right after gaining entry to the Feynman from the Marine shuttle. I demonstrate playing through all four phases: Human Action Phase, Alien Action Phase, Orbit Phase, and Discovery Phase in both Exploration Turns and Combat Turns. I demonstrate and explain the Ambush and Discovery Procedures and how checking to see if the Marines are Surprised differs between Procedures. Captions are present to explain or clarify topics where I found my verbal monologue to be confusing or to contain slight errors.
I don't have a camera stand, so be warned that the video is taken freehand.
This play through will utilize a series of short videos. If you have a hard time with wobbly videos, you may want to bail early. Each video is filmed after I play the turns depicted. I play the game off camera, take notes, and recreate the action, interspersed with descriptions of applicable rules and game play mechanics. Doing it this way minimizes time lost to rolling dice, drawing counters, and looking up rules. It probably takes away from some of the thrill of live action dice rolling when against the odds results occur.
Last Frontier: The Vesuvius Incident was originally published in 1993 by Fat Messiah Games and was designed by Neal Sofge and Michael Wasson. A new version was Kickstarted by Print and Play Productions and published by them in 2013. The only changes between the original version and the Kickstarter version are cosmetic. Rules and gameplay remain the same. The Kickstarter campaign offered different options for purchase when it came to component type, size, and art. At the time of the Kickstarter, the game could be purchased in a polyvinyl bag or in a box (pictured in this video). Laser cut counters and wood blocks (pictured) were other choices. Additionally, the original art was available but I opted for the new art (pictured).
Of note, my Colonial Space Marine pieces and Marine boards are personalized and while functionally the same as stock pieces, display different names and different art (Space Marine counters only). Besides the use of some player aids downloaded from Boardgamegeek, the customized Space Marine pieces are the only custom, non-stock components used.
