Like Luís Brüeh's previous games, Dwar7s Fall and Night Parade of a Hundred Yokai among others, the meeples in Keep the Heroes Out are absolutely adorable. But don't let that fool you, this is a challenging game.
Each monster Clan excels in a specific role - crowd control, defender and support - so, if you have too many of one, or not enough of another, you may find yourself being overrun. This also means that lower player counts may find themselves deficient in one of the roles and need to step up their planning. Because the heroes invade at the end of each player's turn, it scales easily between player counts without affecting the chosen difficulty level. Difficulty is increased by adjusting the number of cards you pull during each hero invasion and there is even an added rule for 5-6 players (What? the box says 1-4 players) that adds an additional wave to keep players hopping.
The game's Dungeon Book describes 20 different scenarios that can be played in a couple different modes: One-Shot Mode lets you play any scenario with any monster Clan while Chronicle Mode divides them into 5 chapters, each with restrictions on Clans and a game-wide ability to unlock afterward for the rest of the Chronicle.
