Get Bit Deluxe
MFG: Mayday Games
#of Players: 3 - 6
Age Range: 7+
Overall Construction: Get Bit Deluxe comes in a tin unlike the standard version, which only comes in a cardboard box. It comes with a little plastic shark with a hinged jaw and 6 fully articulated plastic pirates. These pirates separate at the joints for game play so I will issue a choke hazard warning for the pirates, but if you are responsible in how you play, I could see playing this with children as young as 5. They will enjoy tearing them apart.
A sticker sheet, which is the body, face, and hair/headdress of the pirate. I am not sure if I’m willing to apply the stickers. I bought some supplemental pirates a zombie pirate and an Asian looking pirate, but the stickers did not stay attached to the face area. The other 3 stickers did. I don’t know if this is due to them being older stickers or just a bad batch, but I’m not willing to risk any more stickers.
Each pirate also has a deck of cards numbered 1 through 7. The graphics match the pirate they belong to and depict the pirate in different styles of swimming based on the number on the card.
The rule book doubles as the plank and the ocean that the game play happens on (game board).
Gameplay: The premise behind this game is: You don’t have to be faster than the shark, just faster than everyone else. Hence the numbered cards. The pirates are shuffled up and randomly placed on the game board. If you are playing all 6 players you will run out of space on the board. In that case just place them in a single file line.
Once the pirates are thrown into the ocean the sharks notice and come for their food. Each player will pick a different numbered card to bid for their position away from the shark. Lower numbers are closer to the shark & higher numbers are farther away from the shark. If two player have the same number then neither of them move beyond being pushed towards the shark. The person with the lowest number moves to the front of the line, after them the next highest, until finally the highest number is in front of the line. As each player hits the front of the line, everyone else gets pushed towards the shark. If you are by the shark when all of the numbered cards get resolved, then the shark bites off a limb. If you lose a limb the adrenaline of the bite rushes you to the front of the line. You also get to take your bidding card back, whereas everyone else leaves their cards out on the table (so you don’t have to remember what is in their hand still).
Keep playing until there is only one pirate left. At this point the shark should be too full to eat anyone else and the last pirate should have made it to shore.
Yes/No Recommend: This is a beginner level strategy game. It can teach young players to start watching their odds and how to card count to a degree. As I said it does pose a possible choke hazard, but if your players are sticking parts of the game in their mouth, maybe they shouldn’t be playing this game. To me this game is too predictable and isn’t as much fun as it could be because there are too few variables. A better pirate game from Mayday Games is Walk the Plank. As I said, this isn’t bad for beginning gamers, but is limited. It may play better, if you were playing with complete strangers. I found that when we were playing it was like we were taking turns getting limbs bit of because we were constantly matching each other cards. Causing everyone to stay in place.
Where To Get It: This has been out for a while so it should be easy to get from any game/comic/hobby shop. I bought my copy at Origins Game Fair from the Mayday booth. I believe that they will be at Gencon too. I have not seen it at any of the Big Box stores yet.
