🇺🇸 🇬🇧 Let’s take a quick look at what’s inside the box of Expeditions by @jameystegmaier
In 𝐄𝐱𝐩𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 from @jameystegmaier we venture north in this new standalone game set in the #Scythe universe.
🧭 At the start of the game, each of us gets a random player board and mech, along with a hero‑matching companion. We place our random player board starting from the home base, together with random cards from the item, meteorite, and quest decks.
⚙️ Starting with the first player, we take turns. On your turn, you can either refresh, putting all your chained cards back into your hand, or you can take an action by moving your action cube. When you move the cube, you must take 3 (but usually 2) actions.
These actions are:
🏃♂️ Move your mech, where you must move 1 to 3 spaces.
⛏️Gather, where you perform the actions depicted on the tile—such as gaining workers, drawing new cards, gaining power or guile, collecting coins (points), or gaining glory.
🃏 Play a card, where you play a card from your hand to gain power or guile, and use workers to trigger extra abilities.
🏆 During the game, you’re trying to complete glory objectives, such as having 7 workers or 7 corruption tokens, or having 4 items or 4 quests completed. Once a player has placed four glory tokens, all players get one more turn, and then we tally up the points (coins) to see who won. We add up points received during the game with points for our glory tokens, depending on the number of completed quests, with points for upgraded items and corruption.
💭 If you’re a fan of Scythe, you’ll love this. The production and insert are excellent, as expected from Stonemaier. The game plays quite fast, and the core actions are easy to understand. There are a lot of different icons that take some getting used to, but luckily you have a reference card and an overview in the rulebook. At higher player counts, the game feels a bit tighter than at lower counts. 8️⃣
Later this year, in Q3, Stonemaier Games is releasing a crossover expansion that works with both Scythe and Expeditions, something to look forward to.
