Welcome to Fun with Boxes, Episode 378: Carta Imperia: Rise of Rome, first impressions of this really interesting game of wheeling and dealing to be come the most prestigious family in Rome. The game is designed by Mike Ibeji and will be published by Guntower Games. What is Carta Imperia? In Carta Imperia: Rise of Rome, you play the leading Roman Republic families, negotiating to become the most prestigious. The Family with the most Prestige, measured by ephemeral Dignitas and permanent Auctoritas, wins. The game’s mechanics create a negotiation pit, as dealmaking is central. Almost everything is legitimate currency for advancement: buy alliances with Dignitas, sell Governorships for political gain, bribe lawyers to prosecute rivals, and give generals command of private armies for spoils. Auctoritas, the Legions of Rome, and political legacy are non-negotiable. The game spans 7 Eras, each revealing a Map Card showing Roman history in that Era. Players choose 1 or 2 Action Cards to prioritise their Family’s goals. Each Action Card is played in numerical order.
